The Old English buterflege meaning butterfly so called from an old belief that the insects stole butter apparently. Weird! Anyway, more examples of super-zoom close-up photography...
Apart from the two bees in the scene in the picture above, we have together two of the more common "stealers of butter" a Red Admiral in the background and a Painted Lady in front of it.
The Red Admiral, seen above and indeed below, is a migratory butterfly which has dark wings marked with red bands and white spots.
If you look carefully in the image above you can also see the Painted Lady looking at you head on directly below the Red Admiral. You can see just how paper thin its wings are and the furriness of its body.
You can see the difference between the Painted Lady which is a migratory butterfly with predominantly orange-brown wings and darker markings and its Res Admiral cousin in the picture below.
Finally, how can you tell the difference between a butterfly and a moth? Well, typically a butterfly rests with its wings folded and has long, thin antennae whilst moths rest with their wings open and have feathery antennae.
