Notebook Entry ...Sol

The recent heatwave leading to three very interesting sunsets on consecutive evenings but with very varied atmospheric conditions leading in turn to startlingly different compositions of the setting sun.

The first with a very strong haze but little actual intervening cloud formations giving rise to this perfect spherical view of the sun's orb and the faint glow of its corona in the gloom.

The second catches the sun's orb engulfed by the clouds and illuminating them intensely with its dying rays as it sets below the horizon. The third shows the sun's orb dropping through the trees on the horizon and some birds silhouetted against red sky (you will have to look hard to find them) on their way home to roost for the night.

In all cases the sun was photographable because its intensity to the naked eye was heavily moderated by the density of the atmosphere it being so low in the sky next to the horizon and by the controls in the electronic viewfinder of the camera. All images were made on my OM-3 with a tele lens of crop factor equivalent of 600mm.
