Notebook Entry ...Prime

I have a predilection for fast prime lenses and today I took a couple of them walkabout with me on a low light museum wander. They are perfect for this sort of work. I love the combination of speed, quality, compactness and mobility that you still can't get from zooms. Primes, my first and still really my true love if I am honest...

So the lenses were my Olympus M.Zuiko ED 45mm f1.8 and M.Zuiko ED 12mm f2. The place was one of my favourite locations the Milestones living history museum which is always worth the trek to get there.

12mm, 1/13, f2, ISO 500
12mm, 1/13, f2, ISO 500

The combination of using both lenses at their widest apertures (f2 and f1.8 respectively), the IBIS anti-wobble system of my OM-3 and the camera's electronic shutter allowed me to use the lowest possible ISO settings for maximum image quality.

12mm, 1/10, f2, ISO 320
12mm, 1/10, f2, ISO 320

Mind you using the electric shutter with a slow shutter speed on the fast moving spokes of flywheel on the running engine in the photo above did lead to some 'creative' effects.

These two lenses are part of the Pristine Primes set as OM System now call them and which Olympus used to call their Premium Primes before they sold the company. Either way they are wonderful little optics.

12mm, 1/13, f2, ISO 250

This particular day I had only these two particular lenses with me sufficient to my needs and my known destination. Often, however, on a more general walkabout session I will add a third prime to set, that being my 20mm f1.4. This makes for a powerful troika of optics for general photography work.
