Notebook Entry ...Blue

Along the river on lovely autumn day with the sun shining out of a blue sky for once. When this happens grab your camera and take advantage whilst you may for it's sure not to last and it didn't! While it did, the river reflected the beautiful blue light; gorgeous!

So with my PEN-F camera set up to give a chrome slide (reversal) film look and a set of premium primes about my person, I set off along the river bank to see what I might encounter on this particular fine autumn morning.

Packing the compact PEN-F with three little, fast primes makes a great, flexible easy to carry outfit when you are going to walk a long way up and back down river. It makes walking about taking photos a real pleasure through out the journey rather than one where sooner or later heavy, bulky kit becomes a burdensome fun spoiler.

The pics here were all taken early in the outward part of the walk when the light was at its best. I walked a lot further out and back than I intended as is often the case on a photo walkabout and took a lot more pictures as you do. However, the light changed as did the scenery and maybe the need for coffee began to call on the long way back too!

The local bird life, swans and gulls in particular) was very obliging, often providing interest in the foreground or mid-ground helping to add depth to a photo.

The foot bridge and its architectural impact added to the composition of many of the images and indeed was the main focus of a few of them.  It had a fascination all of its own.

Finally the river would not be the river without its many and varied craft. Boats from pleasure cruisers, barges, tourist cruisers, narrow boats and wide beam boats, all of which added colourful interest to photographic compositions.

Pictures were made on my PEN-F with my set of premium prime lenses. I still prefer primes to zooms though it is a lot less convenient having to change lenses to get different focal lengths when needed than with an equivalent range zoom. However, there is something about the feel of images made with primes combined with the camera set for chrome filmic looks. Perhaps the whole single focal length lens thing slows me down into a more considered way of photography?
